Dreaming of Stephen

59

By Erin LeFey

I saw you in my dreams last night

In the sweetest plaza of a snowy town

Everyone was out enjoying the first heavy wet snow of the spring

It was falling all around us on the bright green leaves

Settling on the fresh flowers and vines

Covering the wide stone stairs, resembling the Spanish Steps in Rome

They terraced all around, and snow was

Drifting into streets, bringing everything to a halt

We both were just visiting the city

And I hadn’t seen you at first, but you had seen me

I was smiling and laughing with a friend of mine

Startled at the falling snow

Yet laughing and playing like we were fairies

Who had nothing but time and smiles

Among the powdery white flakes

I found little acrylic clocks

Tied with ribbons you could hang them from

In spring green, bright blue and daffodil yellow.

The time piece was clear and the numbers, painted on it

And they were the size of my thumb!

Some circular, square, triangle and rectangle

They fell from the sky with the snow

I collected them on my finger

But they weren’t easy to find.

Finally you stepped in front of me and smiled

“Hey, stranger.” In the softest voice

You had on a trench coat and a hat

I’d recognize that hat and smile anywhere

My face lit up so brightly and my body

Melted into your arms as they surrounded me

I felt my whole body smile as I said “Where have you been?”

We slid down a slide to the bottom of the stairs together laughing

You told me that your life was “fun but complicated”

I smiled and said “It always was. Mine is simple, and I’m happy.

But know that I love you and part of me misses you. “

You pointed out your wife from the stairs

I smiled.

I knew we had to part so I turned away

You called after me, “Some days I just feel so old.”

I turned back to look at you, “Sweetheart, you and I will never be old."

And I handed you one of my little clocks.

You asked me if you could do anything for me before you left

I suddenly realized I was trapped in a plant box with no way to lift myself out

The stone walls were to high and with my leg, I couldn’t l get out

You lifted me out. We were both laughing.

I said, “I’m okay from here, it was good seeing you.”

And I really meant it from my heart

I walked away and turned to watch you

You had already started walking toward your life

As I was ascending the stairs to mine

Still holding all the acrylic clocks in my hand

Weightless, timeless, and beautiful

I was happy and content

I saw my friend waiting and I smiled at her

She watched the whole thing and was waiting to hear the story.

I laughed to myself, thinking I just could not put into words

What my life was really all about.

Thank you Charlotte, I woke up smiling at the memory. And I felt like I'd actually seen him. He is a wonderful man, and it was a good relationship - it just faded away. It was nice to be reminded after all these years. Caught me by surprise :)

Geez, snowing in the Spring, little dropping clocks, meeting a past love, sounds darn good to me. Whimsical and full of mystery. I love it!!!

Thank you kirutaye, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Ruby, it was the coolest dream, just as light and whimsical as it sounds. I have a vague recollection of ice skaters too... :)

.......well I really love your last line Miss Erin - and I know you have written about dreams before but I loved the poetic narrative about this particular story - and besides you DO write like a dream - and coming here tonight and being here with you was like a dream come true for the epi-man - I sincerely hope you've had a happy safe and productive summer ......now it's onto fall here by the lake for me but still going into the lake for a swim ....well this week, anyway.

This dream may be represented as a time of season's change, and to see an old friend may represent you seeing a glimpse of your past, and the best of that past is still always with you. The passing on a clock to your friend is that you still want to give time to your past, but the friend is moving on to his destiny, and so you holding on to the timepieces in your hand represents that you still are in control with what time your life has for you. In the dream, your leg was physically trapped, and your friend lifted you up- that represents the reality that your friends will uplift you when you feel burdened with how you are feeling physically. I feel that this dream represents the serenity that you have received from being in the company of friends, and all you have is "time". Erin, I hope you enjoyed the interpretation of your dream. I hope you woke up smiling from this. :)

Epi, so good to see you as always!! I'm so glad you could share my dream - I'm sending you a virtual clock as well! :) I love autumn, its the other in-between season. The changing and cycle of life always recharges my batteries. I can't imagine still going swimming! I hope you have much warmer weather, although I can't imagine Lake Eerie being that warm - don't catch cold before the season even starts! Take care :)

Christina, What an interesting dream interpretation! I like the part especially about what the clocks represent, I felt that way too. Thanks so much!

What an Interesting and Poignant read Erin...Dreams take on so many forms and can imitate life...such a fine thread between the two. I so Enjoyed the read and your thoughts.

b. thanks so much, that is so true. I wonder if this one imitated his life in any way - it sure does mine. I am realizing the passage of time, not in a bad way but in a whimsical one. And I do see snow as a magical time when everyone should come out to play, like back when we had "snowdays". Thanks so much for your thoughts :)

Nell, that is such a neat thought! I wonder. I do believe our souls are intertwined too, and in a way, we carry pieces of time with all those we shared a part of our lives with. What are our life stories but bits and pieces of time spent with others? I have been working on my autobiography lately, but it has nothing to do with that! Perhaps he was saying, don't forget to include me! lol

Memories and dreams of those we love are by their nature sweet, and poignant, Erin. I also agree with Nell; sometimes our souls communicate in ways that are mystical yet powerful. Beautiful write, Erin, as usual. :-)

Hi Genna, so wonderful to hear from you! You are missed when you are away from hubpages! I love getting lost for a while in dreams like these. If it is some sort of soul communication, it was a sweet one. Thank you for the lovely comment, as usual - you are so generous with them :) Take care, my friend.
